Like many old-school Nintendo fans, I first discovered Fire Emblem from Super Smash Bros. Melee. The long-running strategy RPG series was Japan-exclusive for the longest time, since Nintendo thought the games would be too complicated for our tiny Western brains. But once I unlocked Marth, and his hot-headed counterpart, Roy, in Smash, I just had... Continue Reading →
Golden Sun + The Lost Age: A Nostalgic Hidden Gem
The 90’s and early 2000’s were a golden age for the JRPG genre. Games like Final Fantasy VII and Xenogears redefined video games as a storytelling medium with their rich characters and deep themes. But these games can often be tough to get into, due to their dense plots and obtuse battle mechanics. That’s what... Continue Reading →
Hollow Knight: No Cost Too Great
I have a confession to make. For as much as I love video games, I'm kinda bad at them. My reflexes are shite, I get buttons wrong, and I get motion sickness playing first-person shooters. That always made Hollow Knight, Team Cherry's indie hit with Dark Souls-level difficulty, seem too impenetrable for a casual like... Continue Reading →
Pyra and Mythra might be my new Smash mains
The dynamic sword duo, Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade 2, have just been released as DLC fighters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I’ve played Smash since the N64 days, but I’ve always mained Link or Marth because of how easy they are to use (read: I suck). Pyra/Mythra might change that, though. Their moves are... So I’ve been playing Tales of Vesperia…
Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally out, and it's absolutely beautiful. But I can't play it, cause I don't have PS4! So I've been playing a different classic JRPG, Tales of Vesperia on the Nintendo Switch. I'm not super familiar with the Tales games: I played Tales of Symphonia way back on the GameCube and... An Ode to Final Fantasy
When I was six, my best friend was a boy named Mike went to my elementary school. We'd spend every afternoon together holed up in his mom's basement playing Super Nintendo. I loved Super Mario World and Pilotwings, but the game I always wanted to play was a weird little ditty called Final Fantasy IV.... Continue Reading →
5 Anime That Would Be Awesome as Video Games
Anime and video games have been an odd couple since the beginning. There have been tons of video games based on anime over the years, and games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are clearly inspired by anime’s unique visual style and storytelling. But a lot of anime-based games don't use the source material to their full potential. Most of them are Street Fighter knockoffs or mobile games designed to waste your time and money on gacha mechanics (no thanks!). So I thought I’d talk about some anime that I think would make amazing video games. I'm sure none of these will be made, but hey, a girl can dream, right?
Radical Changes I’d Love To See In A New Zelda Game
The Legend of Zelda is my favorite gaming series of all time. I've loved the series ever since I was 9 years old, booting up Ocarina of Time for the first time and gazing in wonder at the lush, beautiful world of Hyrule. The series has had its ups and downs since then, but it's... Continue Reading →
